Properties

• Strong oxidizing agent : its primary characteristic. Works in both acidic and alkaline conditions for bleaching and disinfection.

• Decomposes slowly into water and oxygen : Decomposition is accelerated by heat, light, impurities, or heavy metal ions.

• Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic.

• Can act as a reducing agent when encountering stronger oxidants.

Main uses

1.Bleaching Agent: 

•  Used for bleaching pulp, textiles (cotton, linen, synthetic fibers), hair, and foodstuffs (e.g., flour, edible oils).

2.Disinfection & Sterilization: 

•  Used in medical settings for wound disinfection; in food industry for equipment and packaging sterilization; as a biocide in water treatment.

3.Chemical Synthesis: 

•  A key raw material for producing peroxides (e.g., sodium percarbonate, sodium perborate), propylene oxide, caprolactam, etc.

4.Environmental Treatment:

•  Used in wastewater treatment (oxidizing organic matter, decolorization, cyanide removal) and flue gas treatment (desulfurization and denitrification).

5.Semiconductor & Electronics:

•  Used in wafer cleaning and etching.

6.Other Industries: 

•  As a foaming agent (e.g., for porous materials), oxidizer in rocket propellants, etc.
