Product Detail

Soda Ash

CAS CODE : 497-19-8

Product Overview

Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) is a key product in basic inorganic chemical industry, often called the "Salt of Industry." As a vital basic raw material, its primary use is in glass manufacturing, and it is also essential for producing various chemicals, detergents, and metallurgical fluxes. Its aqueous solution offers good buffering and water-softening capabilities, making it widely used in water treatment, textiles, and food processing.

Properties

  • Alkalinity: Its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline, though weaker than sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). It is an important inorganic base.

  • Thermal Stability: Stable at high temperatures but begins to decompose around 850°C.

  • Hygroscopicity: The anhydrous form readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air, caking and forming sodium bicarbonate.

  • Reactivity: Reacts with acids to form salt, water, and carbon dioxide; reacts with metal ions like calcium and magnesium to form carbonate precipitates.

Main Uses

1.Glass Manufacturing:

•  The largest consumption sector. As a primary raw material (supplying Na₂O), it lowers the melting point of silica sand for producing flat glass, container glass, etc.

2.Chemical Production:

•  Used to manufacture various sodium salts (e.g., sodium silicate, sodium phosphate, sodium chromate), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), monosodium glutamate, etc.

3.Detergents & Soaps:

•  Used as a builder to soften water and enhance cleaning power in laundry detergents, soaps, and industrial cleaners.

4.Metallurgical Industry:

•  Used as a flux in ore processing and metal smelting (e.g., tungsten extraction).

5.Water Treatment:

•  Used for pH adjustment, industrial water softening, and neutralizing acidic wastewater.

6.Pulp & Textile:

•  Used in paper pulping liquors and textile post-dyeing treatment to remove impurities and adjust pH.

7.Food Industry:

•  Used as an acidity regulator, leavening agent, and processing aid (e.g., in noodles, pastries) in compliance with food-grade standards.
